The winner of Saturday's FA Cup final between Arsenal and Hull City will lift a brand new FA Cup trophy. This is the third iteration of the current design, which was first introduced in 1911 and lasted until 1992. Wear and tear on the FA Cup seems to have increased in recent years though, as the 1992 edition is already being replaced with another identical version. This is apparently mostly Chelsea's fault.
The video above provides a fascinating look at the more than 250 hours of craftsmanship that went into making the new FA Cup, as well as a closer look at the two retired trophies, which The FA retains. But anyone already longing for the past editions of the cup might take solace in knowing that although the trophy is new, the base and its original engraving remain the same.
The trophy that symbolizes the 143-year-old competition is something most of us think of as just existing. But knowing that there are highly skilled people actively working hard to keep the tradition alive makes it all the more special.
