Britain's maddest car? Owner covers vehicle with 100 toys, gadgets and modifications

We're not sure how Darren Bond's £100 Volkswagen Polo is roadworthy or legal... but it is

With multicoloured bodywork, a cannon and toys on the roof, Darren Bond has staked a claim to owning Britain’s maddest car.

Kitchen fitter Darren paid just £100 for the Volkswagen Polo and has since decked it out with dozens of second-hand toys, gadgets, and child-like modifications.

His unmissable motor has a mop head instead of a gear stick, a Darth Vader on the roof, and more than 100 objects inside and out.

Darren, 45, modified the budget vehicle because he ‘wanted to put smiles on people’s faces’, and is now taking his bizarre wheels on a tour around the UK.

Darren has attached dozens of objects to the car - including a vacuum cleaner, a metal elephant, a flying Barbie, a skeleton, a skull and crossbones flag and a Homer Simpson figure.

The jaw-dropping supermini is powered by a 1-litre engine, which gives it a top speed of just 94mph.

But while its 0-60mph time of 17.9 seconds won’t get it anywhere near a Ferrari, it will steal the show in the eye-catching stakes.

On top of the car is a cannon, along with Darth Vader from the Star Wars movies. The car is also covered in dozens of painted golf balls and even a deodorant can.

There is a set of flip-flops glued to the side, numerous stripy socks on the front and a skateboard.

Dad-of-two Darren, who has raised more than £1,000 for the Candlelighters Trust through his wacky motor, said: 'I’ve spray painted it various different colours and I go into charity shops and buy toys to then stick on the car.

'It helps the charities out and helps with the car. I’ve just added Darth Vader as well. It was my son’s and he loves it.

'I went to an American car show over the weekend and it was my car that got all of the attention. It was amazing.

'People just come up to the car and say they can’t believe what they are seeing.'

Darren’s outlandish car has attracted the attention of expensive car owners, stunned onlookers and the police, who pulled Darren over earlier this week.

He said: 'The police stopped to have a look at and they just laughed, while a Lamborghini driver got out of his car to take a picture.

'Despite the modifications, it drives immaculately, although I don’t really drive above 40 or 50mph.

'It has been really good, and provided a great buzz. It’s a work of art in a way and it has been seen by people from all over the world.

'A couple of weeks ago loads of tourists started taking photos of it, people from China, Australia.

'I took it to Brighton and loads of OAPs came up to say how it had cheered them up. It was the same when I took it to Buckingham Palace.

'No one really says anything bad about it. There is loads of bad stuff going on in the world and this provides a bit of light relief. It is a bit different and puts a smile on people’s faces.

'It only cost £100 and I’ve already raised nearly £1,000 for charity so I’m pretty happy.'
