Children of couple held in Sweden to stay with Muslim family for a while – Bernama

The Stockholm Social Service will transfer the children of a Malaysian couple held by Swedish authorities to a Malaysian Muslim family soon.

A Swedish social service senior officer conveyed this development to Umno Youth Community Complaints Bureau chairman Sheikh Nafiq Alfirdaous, following a meeting between the two parties yesterday.

Sheikh Nafiq said currently, the Stockholm social service was only waiting for the parents to agree to the transfer, and approval of the court before the transfer was finalised.

"We hope the matter could be resolved soon," he told the Malaysian media after the meeting in Stockholm.

It was learnt the transfer of the children could come about within 24 hours, depending on how soon the relevant documents could be processed.

The couple comprise Tourism Malaysia officer in Sweden, Azizul Raheem Awalludin and wife, Shalwati Norshal, a teacher, who have been detained since December 18, for punishing their son for not praying.

Following their detention, the couple's four children have been separated from them for almost 40 days.

Earlier, the Swedish authorities had appointed a non-Muslim foster family to look after the children. – Bernama, January 28, 2014.
