Criticism of Najib on holiday attracts international attention

Najib, enjoy your break as flood worsens, says PAS leader

The anger and criticism of Malaysians directed against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at a time when the country was hit by flooding has been reported by The Washington Post.

"A world leader is under fire for playing golf in Hawaii at a time of national crisis. Only this time, it is not President Barack Obama," the paper said.

"Rather, it is Malaysian Prime Minister Najib, who hit the links on Wednesday with Obama at a course on a Marine base in Kaneohe Bay.

"Najib's rounds surprised some of his countrymen, who are calling on him to return home to deal with massive flooding that has displaced tens of thousands,” it said.

The paper ran a report on the United States president and Najib playing golf in Hawaii.

The Washington Post noted that Obama had also been criticised for playing golf, including after the beheading of American journalist James Foley by the Islamic State.

Malaysians' frustration over Najib’s absence has been apparent on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

However, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin defended his boss yesterday, saying he deserved a break for working so hard. – December 26, 2014.
