DAP lawmaker dies of cancer, says paper

The DAP Teluk Intan member of parliament Seah Leong Peng died of cancer this morning, the Star online reports today. He was 48.

It said the party's acting chairman, Tan Kok Wai, confirmed it and said a statement would be issued soon.

Ipoh Timur MP Thomas Su said Seah died of bladder cancer at the University of Malaya Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur at 7.45am.

"He was diagnosed in February and his condition worsened.

"We are making the necessary arrangements to bring the body back to Teluk Intan.”

A first-term MP, Seah won the Teluk Intan seat in the 2013 general election after defeating Gerakan chairman Datuk Mah Siew Keong by 7,313 votes in a three-cornered fight.

He polled 27,399 votes while Mah received 20,086 votes while independent K. Moralingam managed 279 votes.

Seah also served as the Pasir Bedamar assemblyman in Perak for three terms and was an executive councillor in the short-lived Pakatan Rakyat state government in 2008.

His death is the latest blow to DAP, which lost its Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh in a road accident at KM306.1 of the North South highway near Gua Tempurung on April 17.

The by-election to fill Karpal’s seat has been fixed for May 25 while nomination is set for May 12. – May 1, 2014.
