Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Haji Talib menafikan Dataran Merdeka akan dijadikan lokasi perhimpunan yang didakwa mahu menggulingkan kerajaan, dan menegaskan lokasi itu hanya untuk sambutan ambang tahun baru 2014.

Menurut Ahmad Phesal, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) belum menerima sebarang permohonan daripada mana-mana pihak untuk berhimpun di Dataran Merdeka.

"Dataran Merdeka hanya digunakan untuk acaran sambutan tahun baru dan beberapa program hiburan yang kita sudah aturkan,” katanya kepada The Malaysian Insider di Kuala Lumpur pada Isnin.

“Ini bermakna dari segi penggunaan, seperti apa yang saya katakan, hanya untuk sambutan tahun baru dan tiada acara lain seperti didakwa.”

Sekumpulan mahasiswa di bawah Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun) telah mengumumkan perhimpunan pada malam ambang tahun baru di Dataran Merdeka untuk membantah siri kenaikan harga barang dan perkhidmatan. Publisiti perhimpunan itu disebarkan melalui laman sosial Facebook dan Twitter.

Isnin lalu, pemimpin pelajar Azan Safar ditahan di Kuala Lumpur untuk disiasat di bawah seksyen 9 (5) Akta Perhimpunan Aman 2012, berhubung perhimpunan tersebut.

Azan merupakan antara mereka yang melancarkan program Turun di hadapan kompleks Sogo di  Kuala Lumpur hujung minggu lalu.

Selepas dibebaskan, Azan berkata siasatan polis ke atasnya tidak menghalang beliau meneruskan kempen "2014 Tahun Sengsara Rakyat" melalui perhimpunan besar di Dataran Merdeka pada 31 Disember ini.

Kerajaan baru-baru ini mengumumkan tarif elektrik akan naik sebanyak 15 peratus bermula Januari 2014. Selain itu, kadar tol di 15 lebuh raya juga akan naik.

Pada September, subsidi petrol RON 95 dan diesel dikurangkan menyebabkan kenaikan harga bahan bakar itu di samping barang keperluan asas lain.

Semasa membentangkan Bajet 2014 pada Oktober lalu, Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Razak mengumumkan subsidi gula dihapuskan secara serta-merta dan memperkenalkan Cukai Barangan dan Perkhidmatan (GST) yang berkuatkuasa April 2015. – 26 Disember, 2013.
