Mahathir Mohamad tiba di sini untuk menerima anugerah Habitat-Rafik Hariri

Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) 2012, yang dijangka disampaikan pada

Jumaat.

Beliau diiringi isteri, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

Dr Mahathir, 87, dinamakan pemenang anugerah itu pada Jun lepas oleh

jawatankuasa pemandu anugerah bagi mengiktiraf kepimpinan, negarawan dan tadbir

urus yang baik.

Anugerah itu dinamakan sempena bekas perdana menteri Lubnan, Allahyarham

Rafik Hariri, ditubuhkan oleh keluarga Hariri dan inisiatif bersama Habitat PBB

melalui Yayasan Rafik Hariri pada Mac 2009.

Anugerah dibuka kepada individu, organisasi atau institusi seluruh dunia di

atas pencapaian dalam bidang kepimpinan, negarawan, tadbir urus yang baik;

pembinaan dan pembinaan semula penempatan dan komuniti, pembangunan sumber

manusia; dan aktiviti kebajikan memerangi kemiskinan bandar dan pelaksanaan

Agenda Habitat.

MAHATHIR-ANUGERAH 2 NEW YORK

Pemenang anugerah sebelum ini ialah Perdana Menteri Turki Recep Tayyip

Erdogan, yang juga diiktiraf bagi kategori kepimpinan, negarawan dan tadbir urus

baik, terutama sewaktu menjawat jawatan Datuk Bandar Istanbul pada pertengahan

19990-an apabila beliau menganjurkan Persidangan Kedua PBB tentang Penempatan

Manusia. Ia membawa kepada penubuhan Habitat PBB, beroperasi sepenuhnya di bawah

program PBB yang ditugaskan menggalakkan menyediakan perlindungan untuk semua.

Nazek Rafik Hariri, balu Rafik Hariri dan presiden Yayasan Rafik Hariri,

semasa pengumuman pemenang anugerah itu berkata suami beliau sangat mengagumi

pencapaian Dr Mahathir.

"Perhubungan mereka berdasarkan kepentingan bersama membina keyakinan dan

kejayaan ekonomi untuk negara masing-masing," katanya.

Bekas perdana menteri Lubnan itu telah beberapa kali melawat Malaysia

sewaktu pemerintahan Dr Mahathir. Pada September 2004, Allahyarham yang

memerintah selama lima kali, mendapat pengiktirafan Habitat Award Scroll of

Honour, anugerah tertinggi PBB dalam pembangunan penempatan.

Penasihat Saintifik Habitat PBB Prof Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka bercakap bagi

pihak jawatankuasa pemandu telah menggambarkan Dr Mahathir sebagai, "seorang

individu luar biasa yang melakukan perkara luar biasa untuk negaranya.

MAHATHIR-ANUGERAH 3 NEW YORK

"Malaysia sedang mara ke arah pembangunan ekonomi yang pesat ketika zaman

(kepimpinan) Dr Mahathir. Ia diiktiraf bahawa beliau jelas mempengaruhi semua

negara membangun lain akan kemungkinan untuk membangun secara pesat dalam tempoh

yang singkat," katanya.

Pengerusi Juri Antarabangsa Mervat Tallawy berkata: "Pendapatan per kapita

Malaysia semasa beliau (Dr Mahathir) memerintah meningkat lapan kali ganda,

model pemikiran untuk keluar daripada masalah atau krisis hampir sama seperti

Perdana Menteri Rafik Hariri".

Kenyataan Habitat PBB yang dikeluarkan semasa pengumuman itu menganggap Dr

Mahathir berjaya menjadikan Malaysia sebuah negara yang melalui proses pemodenan

dan kemajuan ekonomi yang pantas.

"Beliau (Dr Mahathir) adalah seorang tokoh politik yang berpengaruh dan

berjaya memenangi lima kali berturut-turut pilihan raya umum dan kekal sebagai

tokoh politik yang aktif selepas bersara," menurut kenyataan itu.

Karier politik Dr Mahathir menjangkau hampir 40 tahun dan menjadi Perdana

Menteri selama 22 tahun iaitu antara 1981 dan 2003.

Dr Mahathir dan Dr Siti Hasmah tiba di sini, pada Khamis untuk lawatan rasmi

empat hari ke Amerika Syarikat (AS) dan disambut Duta Malaysia ke AS, Datuk

Othman Hashim dan isteri Datin Rohayazam Kamarulzaman di Lapangan Terbang

Teterboro di New Jersey dan kemudian disambut Konsul Jeneral Malaysia di New

York, Syed Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman, di hotel penginapan.

Dr Mahathir, dijangka bertemu pelajar Malaysia dari New York, New Jersey,

Connecticut dan Pennsylvania pada Sabtu manakala Dr Siti Hasmah akan bertemu

isteri-isteri kepada perwakilan tetap ke PBB di sini.
