SUNGAI SIPUT: TWO families whose houses were destroyed in a fire at Jalan Besar, Sungai Siput on Monday came by some financial respite after they received token aid from the Kuala Kangsar Natural Disaster Fund yesterday.
Each family was given RM2,000. The aid were presented by Lintang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun and Sungai Siput Barisan Nasional coordinator R. Ganesan.
Mohd Zolkafly said the aid would help cushion their financial difficulties temporarily while the authorities looked into the short and long term needs of affected families.
The houses belong to petty trader K. Kannapathy, 56, and single mother N. Fanasundari, 58. In the fire on May 20, Fanasundari's house was gutted to the ground while the other house was 85 per cent burnt.
Mohd Zolkafly said he would seek the assistance of Yayasan Bina Upaya Darul Ridzuan (YBUDR) to help rebuild the homes, but YBUDR would first have to get consent from the land owners.
Relating the incident, Fanasundari said minutes after she stepped out of the house a neighbour alerted her of the fire.
"It was too late to salvage anything. I am thankful for the financial aid," she added saying her losses were estimated at RM150,000.
Kannapathy whose house shares a common roof with Fanasundari's, said his material loses were estimated to be around RM30,000.
