Five apps to keep track of your personal finances

The beginning of April means a new tax year and a new financial year so getting your money sorted and organised straight away can only be a good thing.

We have rounded up a few of the best mobile banking and finance apps to help make moving your money around and keeping it all in check is the easiest it can be.

Barclays Pingit - Android, BlackBerry, iOS

The Barclays Pingit app is a great app as you can send and receive money using just a mobile number and it works for anyone with a UK-registered current account, whether that is Barclays or not.

You'll have to register first, which requires your sort code and account number and your details have to be verified at a Barclays ATM or by using the company's PINsentry device.

After you have registered, you can send up to £1500 a day to family and friends and receive up to £5000 a day from other users and if you are a Barclays customer, you can view all your account transactions and see your balance.

Lloyds Bank Mobile Banking - Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows

The Lloyds Bank Mobile Banking app will allow Lloyds customers to log in with your usual internet banking details so you won't need to spend time registering again.

Once you are logged in, you will be able to make transfers between your accounts, view your balance and transactions, check your credit card and pay the bill, as well as manage your existing overdraft.

For those who aren't with Lloyds, you can use the app to find a Lloyds bank, cash point or LINK ATMs in the UK, which could come in very handy if you need to draw out some cash.

Goodbudget - Android, iOS

The Goodbudget app was formally known as EEBA, the Easy Envelope Budget Aid and it is a personal and household budgeting app that wants to help you spend, save and give to what you is important to you.

It uses the envelope budgeting method and you can track your bank balance as well as envelope balances, plus record your expenses and split transactions.

The Goodbudget app can be synced across more than two devices so you can budget with your friends and family and if you go onto the web, you will be able to schedule future and recurring transactions, as well as get detailed reports.

Money Lover - Expense Manager - Android, iOS

The Money Lover - Expense Manager app will let you budget and track your spending, as well as act as a financial calendar.

You can add income from salaries, winnings or sales along with expenses from dating to travel and the app will let you know when you have debts while also reminding you of transactions.

The app will also allow you to add customised categories for income and expenses, plan events, budgets and savings, plus it operates in a number of languages from English to Thai.

Mint Personal Finance - iOS

Mint Personal Finance by Mint.com takes a slightly different approach to helping you keep track your money by offering the ability to add your bank account, credit cards, loans and retirement accounts.

You have to open an account with Mint.com but once you have done this, it will automatically pull in and categorise your transactions so you won't need to manually enter them.

The app will also send you bill reminders, create a customised budget based on your actual spending and it is protected with a four-digit PIN to keep everything safe.
