KUALA TERENGGANU, March 29 (Bernama) -- Ten evacuation centres, housing 893

flood victims, were opened in several districts in Terengganu following

unusually heavy rain in Marang, Kemaman, Kuala Terengganu and Dungun since

yesterday.

A Terengganu Disaster Operations Room spokesperson said four evacuation

centres were set up in Kemaman which sheltered 175 victims from 33 families,

while in Marang, three centres were opened housing 31 victims from 13 families.

"In Kuala Terengganu, 226 victims from 56 families are staying in two

relocation centres since midnight," he said.

Meanwhile, in BALING, eight villages in Kupang were hit by floods at about

2am today, affecting about 1,000 residents.

TERENGGANU-FLOOD 2 KUALA TERENGGANU

They are Kampung Landak Hilir, Belakang Panggung, Pekan Khamis, Banggol

Lahar, Cenerai, Belakang Sekolah, Raja, Pekan Kupang and areas near Sungai

Kupang.

The floods caused by heavy rain since 9pm yesterday resulted in water from

Sungai Kupang to overflow.

Kedah Social Welfare Department director Zulkifli Ramli, when contacted by

Bernama, said the department was conducting a census on victims involved in the

flood estimated to affect about 1,000 families since early this morning.

In IPOH, flood evacuees in Kerian who were relocated since March 21 were

allowed to return home since 10.30am today following improved situations at

affected villages.

Kerian police chief Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan, when contacted by Bernama today,

said the two relocation centres at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Merah and SK

Alor Pongsu were also closed today.

TERENGGANU-FLOOD 3 (LAST) KUALA TERENGGANU

Eleven villages were flooded in 0.5 metres of water after the Bukit Merah

dam overflowed since March 21.

He added that although the situation has returned to normal, the police and

other agencies are ready for possibilities of recurring floods.
