Glossing over past imperfections

3M wants to make your car paintwork beautiful again.

What can put a frown on a car owner's face faster than an imperfection in their otherwise perfect paintwork? There's nothing like having that blip rectified to put that pride and joy back into the heart.

Paintwork repair can be a time consuming process and 3M, the diversified technology company, is going to make the process of easier, faster and better with the addition of three new products. Designed to be used together as a system, the benefits are not only to the bodyshop but also to the customer as the products save time while providing a long-lasting quality result that looks better than before.

Perfect-it III Fast Cut XL is a compound designed to eliminate scratches over large areas and deliver a superior high-gloss on refinished or original paintwork. A new formulation, the fast-acting compound offers greater coverage, reduces the amount of dust thrown out and doesn't splatter on to adjacent panels making clean up faster. This makes Perfect-it III Fast Cut XL suitable for smaller jobs as well so the same superior finish is available to car owners whatever the size of the job.

Quick Connect System is a compounding and polishing system that was created to make the job of the professional vehicle repairer faster, easier and more economical. The system is based around a Quick Connect adaptor that fits directly on to the buffer, with double-sided foam compounding and polishing pads and double-sided wool compounding pads of different sizes. The adaptor eliminated the need for a back-up pad and enabled the technician to switch between different size pads for the same job while the rounded edges of the pads made it easier to polish difficult areas. The wool pads also had a wear indicator so that the pad could be reversed or replaced to ensure consistent quality.

The final product is a new Trizact Foam Finishing Disc, 6000 Grade that makes compounding and polishing easier. The idea behind the disc’s design is to reduce the depth of scratches further after using a Trizact Fine Finishing Disc, 3000 Grade. By ensuring that scratches are properly removed before polishing, it can reduce the number of labour hours required and substantially reduce re-work. Although the 6000 grade is an extra step, in bodyshop trials, the new disc has proved to save time and improve quality in the paint rectification process, as it produces an almost polished look even before compounding.
