Greek bishop Theoklitos of Ioannina dies

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek bishop Theoklitos of Ioannina has died at the age of 83.

A spokesperson for the Ioannina University hospital says he died Sunday after a short, unspecified illness.

Theoklitos was born in 1930 and studied theology and economics at the universities of Athens and Piraeus. He was a military priest in the 1960s and became Metropolitan bishop of Ioannina, a city in northwestern Greece, in 1975.

He was involved in the finances of the Greek Orthodox church and was for many years a member of the board of directors of the National Bank of Greece.

Considered a liberal within the church, the plain-spoken cleric caused a fuss when he appeared at a National Bank function in Serbia in a coat and tie. The church forbids clerics from wearing civilian clothes.
