Guan Eng shocked, saddened by news of Chong Wei’s positive sample result
The Penang government is shocked and saddened by the news that world badminton No.1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei's B sample has tested positive for dexamethasone.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that he did not know how to react to the news.
"We are shocked and sad," he told reporters in Bukit Mertajam where he launched a flood mitigation project early this afternoon.
Chong Wei is one of Malaysia's greatest sportsmen and one of Penang's most famous sons.
It was reported that he had been implicated after traces of dexamethasone were found in his urine (A sample) during a random test conducted at the World Championships.
He went through a random dope test during the World Championships in Copenhagen on August 30.
On Wednesday he flew to Norway to witness the opening of the seal of his B sample.
Chong Wei now faces a two-year ban but will get a chance for a hearing with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), in a date to be announced soon.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is scheduled to make an official announcement in a press conference this afternoon at BAM headquarters, The Star reported today.
Penang sports exco Chong Eng said the badminton association or the National Sports Council should explain what happened.
"Until now, we are still unclear. Malaysians are waiting for explanations," she said.
