Health Ministry holds Selangor responsible over rising dengue cases

Dengue cases on the rise, says Muhyiddin

The Health Ministry is displeased with the Selangor government and its municipal councils for being ineffective in reducing dengue cases.

The Star Online today quoted Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam as saying that dengue cases were increasing daily, but no action had been taken to stem the tide.

"Until July 19, there have been a total of 28,621 dengue cases reported in Selangor with 38 deaths," he said while visiting residents in Taman Sentosa, Klang, which is a dengue hotspot.

He said statistics show a three-fold increase in cases as compared to the same period last year. Only 6,520 reported dengue cases were reported as of July 19, 2013, and seven deaths.

He said fogging was a futile exercise as authorities did little to help prevent dengue, adding that the Health Ministry has allocated RM16million yesterday to help deal with it.

Bernama also reported on Thursday that the country has recorded a total of 54,152 cases and 96 deaths from dengue. This is an increase of 256% as compared to the same period last year.

Selangor recorded the highest fatalities at 38 people as compared to seven people last year while Johor experienced 14 deaths. Only Labuan and Perlis have not recorded any fatalities. – July 26, 2014.
