Hell hath no fury… when a brand new Peugeot gets ‘kissed’

Woman at centre of social media storm says ‘sorry’

From a picture of a woman in hijab posing with a car steering lock to a parody commercial of the French car brand Peugeot, Malaysians are once again poking fun at a viral video showing the ugly Malaysian in action.

The last time Malaysians partied online over a viral video was during the "Listen Listen" incident in 2012, where a Universiti Utara Malaysia undergraduate who criticised the government was publicly berated by a woman representing a pro-Umno outfit.

This time, it is a two-and-half minute video of an incident in Kuantan, showing a woman, incensed that her three-door Peugeot had been hit by a car driven by an elderly man, alighting from her vehicle, armed with a car steering lock.

She then screamed at the man, who pleaded that the accident, a kiss on the bumper, was unintentional.

The young woman refused to listen and continued shouting and hitting at the man's car in front of shocked onlookers, even when the man said he was prepared to compensate.

"You see what you did?! Pay me now, two thousand! Pay me now!" screamed the woman.

The video went viral, setting off a series of parodies and remarks, with almost unanimous agreement that the woman was uncouth and bad-mannered.

Many commentators also couldn't help noticing that she was wearing the hijab, the Islamic headdress worn by Muslim women, and commented that her action did not reflect Muslim behaviour, especially in the month of Ramadan.

"Bcs of this sh*t women, ppl will looking down at hijabis & especially islam. I dont even expected that this lady was scolded that old man. Seriously it shows that she hasn't know how to respect ppl elder than us," said Shamiera Alina, who herself has a profile picture in tudung, on a YouTube comment.

The steering lock swung by the woman in the incident soon became a source for many parodies. One showed a woman posing for a hijab fashion, with a steering lock in hand.

Another tweaked the lion in the Peugeot logo, with one hand holding a steering lock.

Others were more serious, creating a Facebook page called "Kami Benci CDM25", referring to the woman's car licence plate number.

Another showed a screenshot of the car's registration details, showing the car was brand new and owned by a company. Yet another had the alleged face of the woman.

While some comments bordered on stereotype, others were quick to douse the flame, such as this:

"She's putting the whole Malay race into shame. Sebab setitik nila rosak susu sebelanga.

"You really can't judge a person by their outer appearance. Must it be their race, their gender and their choice of wardrobe. Bad people exists in all races, all genders and wears different stuff. They lack the maturity to have common sense and rationality that we basically learned in Darjah 4. This sort of thing might be happening all over Malaysia right now.

"Instead of discriminating a whole race, let's just discriminate (or better yet, feel a sense to educate) people like her," said YouTube user Niltiva. – July 16, 2014.
