Home Ministry seizes Suara Keadilan in Kedah

Timbalan ketua PKR cabang Petra Jaya isytihar keluar parti

PKR today accused Putrajaya of attempting to silence dissent following the Home Ministry's seizure of Suara Keadilan newspapers in Kedah on September 10.

Ministry officials are reported to have raided various locations in Alor Star, Kuala Kedah, Jitra, Pendang and Kepala Batas, seizing more than 300 copies of the party's newspaper, the Keadilan Daily news portal reported.

‎Keadilan Alor Star branch supervisor Peter Jeyabelan told Keadilan Daily that Putrajaya's actions showed that they were afraid of current issues being disseminated to the rakyat.

"This is a clear and blatant attempt by Putrajaya to halt information from reaching the people. The government is so afraid that the people would update themselves on current issues.

"But the ministry's efforts in seizing copies of Suara Keadilan is in vain as the information will still reach the rakyat, one way or another. It does not matter how many raids they carry out," he said.

Kuala Kedah MP Dr Syed Azman Ismail said the Home Ministry's actions lately were the opposite of what a democratic government would do.

"It appears that Barisan Nasional is afraid it's corrupt practices and abuse of power will reach the rakyat's attention. They are afraid that their position is being threatened by Pakatan Rakyat."

Syed Azman said the raids by the Home Ministry would actually prove to be a blessing in disguise for Pakatan Rakyat as the people could still access the news via other mediums and not merely print.

"The freedom of the press cannot be muzzled anymore as the rakyat want to know what is the actual political situation in Malaysia," Syed Azman told Keadilan Daily. – September 15, 2014.
