Infiniti’s IPL to be ‘cheaper’ Merc-AMG alternative

A new performance director and agreement with Merc's AMG will push the IPL brand to greater heights.

Besides racing, winning-streak Sebastian Vettel has been give a task that he needs to undertake. Vettel is set to promote the marque's performance division, known as IPL (Infiniti Performance Line). The IPL series of models is known for its slightly-beefier power output and sharper driving dynamics but it isn't really a threat to the Mercedes-Benz' AMG-range, Lexus' F-series and BMW' M-cars.

Prior to that, Infiniti's IPL will soon share technologies from Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. The three-time Formula 1 world champion will market the line of high-performance cars from Infiniti. With this move, Infiniti is keen to stay on the fast track that will lead better growth for its IPL cars, which their ultimate aim is to bill IPL as "an affordable AMG division".

Currently serving as Infiniti's director of performance, Vettel has played a role in developing cars such as the Infiniti FX Vettel. Besides that, the company has also made low-key introductions for IPL cars in selected markets.

Infinit brand boss Andy Palmer said "Daimler has had 125 years to built a cachet, whereas we are relatively new. Now with Vettel's association in developing IPL, it will spur much faster growth that would gun our performance division onto a higher level".
