PUTRAJAYA, 29 Ogos (Bernama)-- Jumlah pelajar India yang semakin sedikit

memasuki Jabatan Pengajian India, Universiti Malaya (UM) amat mendukacitakan dan

membimbangkan, kata Timbalan Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri S.K.

Devamany.

Beliau berkata hanya 13 pelajar ditawarkan peluang mengikuti kursus major

(Pengajian India) bagi sesi akademik 2012/2013 di bawah jabatan itu bermula 2

Sept, manakala 17 pelajar bagi sesi lalu.

"Lima enam tahun dahulu kita dapati lebih 140 pelajar mengikuti pengajian di

bawah jabatan itu. Kita memang banggga kerana ia merupakan satu-satunya Jabatan

Pengajian India di rantau Asia Tenggara dan berjaya mengharumkan nama negara di

peringkat antarabangsa.

"Malangnya jumlah pelajar kini merosot dari tahun ke tahun. Kita harus

mencari punca kemerosotan itu dan seterusnya mencari kaedah terbaik untuk

menambah bilangan pelajar," katanya kepada Bernama di sini hari ini.

Sehubungan itu Devamany yang juga Naib Presiden MIC berkata beliau akan

mengadakan perjumpaan mengenai perkara ini dengan pegawai-pegawai terbabit

termasuk pegawai Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi, UM, Ketua Jabatan dan para

pensyarah di jabatan itu dalam masa terdekat.

Dalam pada itu, Devamany berkata beliau juga akan mengadakan perjumpaan

dengan Menteri Pengajian Tinggi Datuk Seri Khalid Nordin bagi memohon

pengiktirafan kursus pengajian Bahasa dan Sastera Tamil yang ditawarkan

Universiti Annamalai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Menurutnya, ramai pelajar Malaysia keturunan India menunjukkan minat untuk

mengikuti pengajian di universiti itu yang diiktiraf di peringkat antarabangsa.

"Ramai pelajar menunjukkan minat untuk belajar di universiti itu

terutama dalam bidang pengajian Bahasa dan Sastera Tamil. Masalahnya KPT belum

iktiraf lagi. Jadi saya akan membawa perkara ini kepada menteri terbabit,"

katanya.

Jelas beliau, pengiktirafan itu ternyata akan memberi faedah kepada mereka

meneruskan kerjaya dalam bidang media dan komunikasi, perguruan, penterjemahan

dan industri pelancongan.

"Penggunaan bahasa Tamil ketika ini agak berleluasa dan kita harap ia

berkembang lagi. Jadi pengiktirafan itu membolehkan mereka mendalami ilmu

pengetahuan selain mempertingkat kemahiran dan memperkembang prospek

kerjaya masing-masing," katanya.
