KUALA LUMPUR, 19 Jun (Bernama) -- Kestabilan politik dan ekonomi bakal

menjadi faktor utama bagi transformasi ekonomi Asean yang bermula selepas krisis

kewangan Asia 1997-1998.

Pengerusi Institut Hal Ehwal Antarabangsa Singapura, Simon SC Tay, berkata

berikutan krisis itu, negara-negara Asia telah berusaha untuk membina kestabilan

ekonomi dan politik, walaupun dibayangi oleh dua gergasi ekonomi yang sedang

berkembang, China dan India.

"Tetapi, dengan kedua-dua negara ini menghadapi masalah, lebih banyak

perhatian kini tertumpu kepada Asia Tenggara," katanya pada Persidangan Tahunan

Asia Pasifik CIMB Kelima di sini hari ini.

Beliau adalah seorang ahli panel pada persidangan itu.

Simon berkata disebabkan krisis itu, penyepaduan di kalangan negara-negara

Asean diberikan penekanan, dengan lebih banyak dasar mesra perniagaan dirangka.

Bagaimanapun, beliau tidak bersetuju dengan dasar-dasar nasionalis dan

perlindungan, dan berkata akhirnya ia akan merosakkan ekonomi.

"Penyepaduan Asean amat penting, khususnya dalam sektor ekonomi," ujar


Sementara itu, pengasas bersama dan Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Institut

Strategi dan Kepimpinan Asia (Asli), Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, berkata kepimpinan

Asean perlu menangani cabaran demokrasi yang semakin memuncak di samping

cabaran-cabaran demografi dan pembangunan.

Beliau, yang juga seorang ahli panel pada persidangan itu, berkata walaupun

cabaran-cabaran pembangunan tertumpu kepada keperluan bagi pembangunan terangkum

dan mampan, dan cabaran demografi pula adalah tentang masyarakat yang semakin

tua, namun cabaran demokrasi memberi penekanan kepada hak-hak kemanusiaan dan


"Bagaimana kerajaan-kerajaan dalam Asean menguruskan cabaran ini adalah

lebih penting lagi apabila lebih ramai orang mengharapkan lebih banyak kebebasan

dan lebih hak asasi manusia," tegas beliau.

Persidangan dua hari itu yang bermula hari ini memberikan tumpuan kepada

visi dan strategi kepimpinan ketika negara-negara Asia berusaha meningkatkan

pertumbuhan, kebolehsuaian dan kestabilan dalam landskap yang semakin global dan

pesat berubah.
