Lahad Datu: Malaysian forces attack intruders

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian security forces have begun an armed assault on the Filipino intruders in Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu.

In a statement early this morning, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that the attack began at 7am.

By 8am, news reports detailing explosions and gunshots began trickling in. According to The Star Online, fresh fighting began between the Filipino gunmen and local security forces early this morning. It was also reported that gunshots were heard and fighter jets were seen. Explosions were also heard for 40 minutes, the Star said.

Deputy Defence Minister Abd Latiff Ahmad had said on Monday that the Malaysian Armed Forces were standing-by  as 'second-liners' in Lahad Datu.

The Sun daily quoted Abd Latiff as saying that they were waiting for orders from the Prime Minister.

"We will be on standby, we are ready. When we are ordered to take over, we will take over," he was quoted in The Sun.
