Langkawi MP unrepentant, continues insults on late Karpal, says Facebook user
A Barisan Nasional MP whose Facebook posting poking fun at the death of Karpal Singh shocked Malaysians has again insulted the late DAP leader, this time comparing him to a hostile figure in Islamic history who fought against Prophet Muhammad.
Facebook user Shamsul Kamal Ariffin Mohd Nasir, 42, told The Malaysian Insider that Langkawi MP, Datuk Nawawi Ahmad (pic, left), during a private Facebook exchange, had compared Karpal to Abu Jahal, considered in Islamic history as the most violent figure who fought early Muslims in Mecca.
"I commented on his Facebook page today to reprimand his uncivilised act which has shamed Muslims. An argument ensued between us after he sent a private message on my social page," said the corporate trainer at a private firm.
Shamsul said he was shocked to discover Nawawi defending his comparison of Karpal to Abu Jahal after the latter had apologised for his earlier posting which was roundly criticised.
Hours after Karpal was killed in a road accident on Thursday, Nawawi had posted a comment which read: "Who wants to challenge Karpal Singh? Please submit your name," referring to a news report on Karpal's famous words "over my dead body" in stating his opposition to having an Islamic state.
The posting drew widespread condemnations from the public as well as from politicians from both sides of the divide.
“When I told him his action not only undermines Umno and BN but also increases the people's hatred towards the party, Nawawi replied he did not regret his action because he did no wrong," Shamsul added.
Shamsul quoted Nawawi as saying that the Prophet had sighed relief after hearing news of the death of Abu Jahal.
"For me, Karpal Singh is equal to Abu Jahal," Nawawi wrote, according to Shamsul.
Shamsul said he then advised Nawawi to consider Karpal's grieving family, telling him that poking fun at the dead was not wise.
Shamsul said Nawawi then answered: "Not poking fun but real agenda, I too have wife and children, so what... up to you, if you want to condemn me, that's your right." – 19 April, 2014.
