Malaysian mum in child abuse case freed from Swedish prison

The Malaysian teacher imprisoned in Sweden for hitting her children was released yesterday and is expected to return home tomorrow, say media reports.

Shalwati Nurshal, the mother of four, was released from Hinseberg Prison in Frovi, Sweden, at around 3pm Malaysian time, after serving six months in prison for assault and gross violation of her children's integrity.

"You appreciate life better. It's just good to be out, alhamdulillah," the secondary school teacher was quoted as saying by The Star Online after her release.

Her husband, Tourism Malaysia official Azizul Raheem Awalludin, was released in July this year over the same charge and returned to Malaysia that month.

On March 28, ‎the Solna District Court in Stockholm sentenced Shalwati and Aziz to 14 months and 10 months in prison, respectively.

Their sentences were reduced and both only needed to serve one-third of their jail term, said Bernama.

The court had also ordered Shalwati and Azizul to pay their children 67,200 SEK (RM33,900) and 36,400 SEK (RM18,362), respectively.

‎The national news agency reported on Sunday that the couple's children were looking forward to celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha with their mother.

Aishah Azizul Raheem, 14, told reporters she and her brothers Ammar, 13, Adam, 12, and Ariff, 8, would make a special card for their mother and give her a bouquet of flowers when they meet her.

The children had returned to Malaysia on January 31, and are under the care of their aunt and uncle in Kelantan. – September 30, 2014.
