MCA has no guts to stand up to Umno on hudud issue, says DAP

DAP has accused MCA of being hypocritical over the hudud issue, saying the Barisan Nasional party has the nerve to attack DAP because its Pakatan Rakyat coalition partner PAS wants to impose Islamic criminal law but has no courage to tick off big brother Umno for "supporting" its implementation.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (pic) told off MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai today for attacking his party but at the same time saying nothing about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak declaring that Putrajaya never rejected hudud.

"Why is Liow attacking DAP when it has openly opposed PAS’s proposed implementation of the hudud law in Kelantan for Muslims while the MCA has yet to attack Umno for supporting the implementation of the same hudud law?" he said in a statement today.

Lim said DAP would stick to its stand and would vote against any motion or private member bill in Parliament, whether from PAS or Umno, that seeks the implementation of hudud because it is unconstitutional.

He also criticised remarks by Najib, who said yesterday that the government has never rejected hudud as Allah’s Law.

Lim, who is Bagan MP and Penang chief minister, said Najib's remarks have "exposed the lies, hypocrisy and double standards of MCA".

"On the one hand, MCA criticises DAP for being responsible for PAS wanting to implement hudud. On the other hand, MCA does not dare to criticise Umno for lauding proposals to implement hudud."

Lim cited the ban on non-Muslim religious materials in hotels by the Pahang Islamic and Malay Customs Council as an example of MCA's "blind obedience".

"As the Bentong MP from Pahang, Liow has kept a strange silence," said Lim.

Lim said Liow was also quiet when Kelantan Umno assemblymen and Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapha Mohamad openly supported the implementation of hudud in the state.

"No amount of signing ceremonies with Chinese organisations to oppose hudud can hide the fact that MCA does not dare to stand up when it counts, in Parliament and the Cabinet, to say no and vote against Umno," he added.

Liow said after meeting with 53 Chinese guilds and associations on Wednesday that the organisations have joined the MCA in rejecting the proposal to implement hudud law in Kelantan.

He said MCA and the organisations resolved to reject the move proposed by PAS via a Private Member’s Bill that will be tabled in Parliament.

Liow said MCA respected the late DAP national chairman Karpal Singh for never wavering in his stand against the implementation of the Islamic law.

He said DAP ought to learn from Karpal and stop playing politics over an issue that affects the people. – April 25, 2014.
