The Home Ministry is working to find the “source” who released the names of 30 purported gang leaders to the media last week.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic) said ministry officials will be calling journalists who wrote the story to find out where they got the list.

"This you should ask KDN (Home Ministry), they are the ones investigating the matter," said Khalid after launching National Blue Ocean Strategy in Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur, this morning.

The list became a subject of contention when lawyers said that Putrajaya was opening itself to lawsuits. At least one man on the list, Kalai Arasu Muniandy, an MIC youth exco member, has threatened to sue the ministry. Kalai was named as a Geng 36 leader.

Subsequently, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar told The Malaysian Insider the ministry was perplexed about who released the names. The list was first published by Bernama.

"We don't know who did it but we want to know as well," he said, adding that he did not know if the list was real or not.

Police have said the list did not come from them.

“I don’t know who is the source at the home ministry, but the input did not come from police. We have our own list and some gangs listed by the ministry were already under our watch,” Federal Police secret societies, gaming and anti-vice (D7) principal assistant director Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan told The Malaysian Insider.

Bernama published the names of more than 30 who were alleged to be leaders of Gangs 04, 08 and 36 and their "areas" last Friday. It was picked up by The Star the next day.

On the list of alleged gang leaders were Tiram Sasi (Johor), Sungai Way Sugu (KL), Prai Bala (Penang), Langkap Sasi (Perak), who are all allegedly with Gang 04; Indren (Penang), Dark (KL), Siva Guru (KL), allegedly from Gang 08; and Cendol Kanna (KL), Devan (a millionaire drug trafficker in KL) and Kajang Kalai (Kajang), who were listed as belonging to Gang 36. - September 14, 2013.
