Mukhriz is my son, I will make sure he carries out his duty if BN wins, says Dr M

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) has promised Sungai Limau voters that he will make sure Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir does a good job for the people in the constituency, but only if they choose Barisan Nasional (BN) in the by-election tomorrow.

The former prime minister, who made an appearance at a carnival rakyat in Sungai Limau today to support the BN campaign, said an elected representative who was close to the BN state government would get more assistance not only from the state but also from the Federal Government. He urged voters to make the right decision by choosing the BN candidate.

"The menteri besar is my son, his name is Mukhriz, he is bald because I keep all the hair. He is bald because he is thinking what else can be done for the people of Kedah," he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Dr Mahathir went on to say he would make sure Mukhriz did a good job in Sungai Limau and Kedah or he would return and teach him a lesson.

He also said the scenario and situation in Sungai Limau had changed quite a lot since his time.

"In 1969, I could not even enter Sungai Limau. Now, they let us in and even listen to our explanations," he said, adding that Kedah will see more development with BN in power.

On Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that Umno is the reason why Malays are poor, Dr Mahathir (pic) said that Anwar was ungrateful.

"He gained his wealth because his father was an Umno supporter. When he was with BN he never told me all this. When he is no longer a deputy prime minister, only then there is an issue," he added.

He also quashed rumours that his presence in Sungai Limau was due to Mukhriz not being able to stand on his own feet and needed his father to help him.

"If I wanted to help him, I would have helped him when I was prime minister. I forbade him when he wanted to get involved in politics before. Now I am no longer prime minister, he can stand on his own," said Dr Mahathir.

He also said his last-minute visit to Sungai Limau was of his own accord.

"I will support BN as long as I am healthy and can talk," he said.

Sungai Limau has been a PAS stronghold since 1995.

PAS candidate Mohd Azam Abd Samad is squaring off against BN's Dr Sohaimi Lazim in the by-election, which was triggered following the death of the late former Kedah menteri besar and Kedah PAS commissioner Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak who had held the seat since 1995. - November 1, 2013.
