‘Hitler’ MP can’t be punished for vexing tweet, says Najib

Asas ekonomi Malaysia kekal kukuh, kata Najib

Datuk Seri Najib Razak today said Umno did not have any specific rules with which they could use to punish their supreme council member Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin for his offensive "Hitler" tweet.

Najib (pic), who is Umno president and the country's prime minister, said Bung was aware of the party's stand that any public statements could not be against the party's policy.

"We do not have any specific rules regarding social media but I have reminded all Umno members that whatever statements they make reflects on the party."

"As an MP, whatever we say or do, outsiders will look at it and it could affect the integrity of all Barisan Nasional MPs."

Meanwhile, Bernama reported Najib reminded Umno members to be careful in making statements or stating opinions because this would in a way affect how others would view the party.

Any statement or view expressed by Umno members should not be in conflict with the principles and struggle of the party, Najib told Bernama.

Following Brazil's humiliating 7-1 defeat to Germany, Bung had tweeted "Long Live Hitler", which drew criticism from the German embassy and social media users.

German ambassador to Malaysia Holger Michael described Bung's tweet as "unacceptable".

Najib also said he rebuked Bung and gave him a stern reminder to avoid making similar statements in the future.

"He has since apologised and retracted his statement.

"He knows the party's stand, we have openly rebuked him and this is a serious reminder."

In a statement yesterday, Najib said Bung's statement was inappropriate and unacceptable.

"He does not speak for the country or the public who understands Europe's past tragedies and the modern unity."

DAP's Dr Ong Kian Ming, the Serdang MP, said Bung's insensitive tweet had made international headlines after being reported by international media.

He urged Najib to ask Bung to resign following the tweet.
