Penang to rename road in honour of Karpal Singh

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today proposed that the IJM Promenade in Seri Pinang be renamed to Persiaran Karpal Singh, in honour of the late DAP leader who died in a road crash last Thursday.

Announcing this to reporters at Karpal's house along Jalan Utama, Lim said renaming the road was a fitting way to honour the veteran lawyer and politician, who was known as the Tiger of Jelutong.

"I will be proposing at the next state exco meeting that we change IJM Promenade and rename it as the Karpal Singh Drive," Lim said.

The IJM Promenade, located next to the Penang Bridge, is about 800m long.

Lim later presented a map of the proposed name change to Karpal's widow, Gurmit Kaur. Also present were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Karpal's son, Gobind Singh Deo.

An emotional Gurmit expressed her appreciation of the Penang government’s efforts to honour her late husband.

"The state government has done a lot to honour the memory of my husband, including holding a funeral with state honours," she said.

"I am very grateful to the Penang government for announcing that the IJM Promenade will be renamed after my beloved husband," Gurmit said, holding back her tears.

"This act will not only make Karpal very proud to be a Penangite, but also me and my entire family."

She also expressed her thanks and appreciation to family, relatives, friends and Malaysians from all over the world for paying their respects to Karpal.

On Thursday, Karpal and his loyal personal assistant, Michael Cornelius, died after their multi-purpose vehicle was involved in a collision with a lorry.

The accident occurred at 1.10am at KM306.1 of the North-South Expressway.

Following his death, hundreds of people, including politicians have been flocking to Karpal's house in Jalan Utama, to pay their last respects. – April 19, 2014.
