Medical Sciences (Picoms)and University of East London (UEL) signed a memorandum

of understanding (MoU) to offer a bachelor degree programme in nursing next

year.

Minister in the Prime Minister''s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom

said the two-year programme would be carried out to ''top up'' the three-year

Nursing Science Diploma currently being offered by Picoms.

"We target 100 students for each intake, and each year there are two

intakes, in April and October," said Jamil Khir, who is also Federal Territory

Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) chairman, here today.

Picoms Executive chairman Datuk Mohd Zubir Sheikh Saad signed the MoU on

behalf of Picoms while UEL was represented by Pro Vice-Chancellor, International

fortunate, especially the groups of tithe receipients, to continue their studies

to the degree level to change their lives.

PICOMS-MOU 2 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR

He said that other than UEL, Picoms had also signed a memorandum of

Agreement (MoA) with Al-Azhar University in Egypt last May to offer a programme

in medicine.

Mohd Zubir said the MoU, MoA and new programmes and those that would be

introduced would be able to help Picoms into becoming a college university in

about two years.

Picoms, which was set up in 1995, is owned by MAIWP and, currently, has 800

students.

Besides the Nursing Science Diploma, Picoms had also received the green

light from the Higher Education Ministry to begin a Diploma in Pharmacy, Diploma

in Medical Science and Diploma in Environmental Health Science.

Meanwhile, commenting on the urgings of deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri

Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday that the funds from tithes be managed productively,

Jamil Khir said MAIWP gave aid to more than 14,000 people every month from the

proceeds of a productive management of funds from tithes.

"Of the total, about 450 were assisted in getting hemodialysis treatment on

a RM8.7 million expenditure. We also have a cooperation with Selayang Hospital

to provide cataract operations," he said.
