Get public opinion first before renaming KL roads, says DAP lawmaker

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng wants a stop to Kuala Lumpur City Hall's renaming of eight major roads until public opinion is sought.

Renaming roads such as Jalan Duta and Jalan Ipoh to the names of past Malaysian monarchs would not only cause confusion but was a waste of public funds, Lim said.

"I have the highest respect for our past Yang DiPertuan Agong but I feel that their names should be used for new roads and not existing ones," he said at the Parliament lobby today.

The move, to begin tomorrow, will also incur added costs for government departments for items like changing the address on their official materials, including letterheads, Lim said.

He also noted that public opinion was not sought before the decision was made and urged the authorities to engage the public first.

"There are so many new developments coming up where these names can be used," he said.

Some new property developments were being given western names and these were the locations that should be given the names of monarchs, instead of changing the names of old and established roads, Lim added.

City Hall Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said the Cabinet consented to renaming eight major roads, effective tomorrow.

The eight roads are:

* Jalan Duta to Jalan Tunku Abdul Halim;

* Jalan Khidmat Usaha to Jalan Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah;

* Jalan Ipoh (from Jalan Segambut junction to Jalan Pahang junction) to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah;

* Persiaran Duta to Persiaran Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin;

* Jalan Khidmat Setia and Jalan Ibadah to Jalan Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin;

* Lebuhraya Mahameru to Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar;

* Persiaran Mahameru to Persiaran Tuanku Ja’afar;

* Jalan Semarak to Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra. – November 25, 2014.
