Renee Zellweger: Plastic Surgery Expert On The Actress' New Face

The Bridget Jones actress stepped out on the red carpet looking noticeably different this week, but while she says the changes are because of a healthier lifestyle, our skincare expert speculates there's more at work

It was impossible not to notice that there was something different about Jerry Maguire actress Renee Zellweger when she posed for pictures on the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards red carpet on Monday night.

Her eyes seemed wider, her face shiny-smooth and wrinkle-free and her trademark cherubic cheeks slimmed down.

Some cried she looked 'unrecognisable', and Renee herself, 45, agreed she did look different - thanks to changes to her lifestyle.

The 45-year-old actress told People magazine: "I’m glad folks think I look different! I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows.

But Dr Yannis Alexandrides, MD at 111 Harley St thinks Renee probably had a little more help then just a few healthier lifestyle changes. But it might not be quite as drastic as some have suggested.

“With different makeup and hair colour it’s be easy to put Renee's change in appearance down to cosmetics," he said.

"However, with tight, smooth skin at the age of 45, she may have undertaken non-surgical procedures to maintain a youthful look."

Could Renee have tried Gwyneth Paltrow's fave non-surgical procedure?

"Thermage is one of the most common non-surgical procedures carried out at my Harley St Clinic, we saw a huge increase earlier this year after Gwyneth Paltrow confessed that it was the 'rubber band sting' tightening treatment that kept her jawline and face taut.

"At 45, Renee should have some signs of wrinkles and loss of elasticity, however her face is line free and smooth, which suggests to me that she may have had a Thermage treatment.

"The procedure uses radio frequency to tighten elastin fibres and stimulate collagen and gradually improves the quality of the skin and tissue over a period of six months - it's a popular option for patients who are interested in a face lift but aren't ready for surgery."

Dr Alexandrides also suggests that the smoothing of angles around the jaw and cheek could be due to fillers, which add volume to the face and erase fine lines.

He adds: "In addition, the skin on the forehead looks incredibly smooth, which is normally achieved with Botox injections every three to four months."

Surgery?

But one area that looks significantly different, and perhaps couldn't have been achieved without a more invasive procedure, is around Renee's eyes.

"Look at Renee’s upper eyelids, which in her early career photos are hooded, making her eyes appear small. In these latest pictures, her eyes are wider and the hooding does not seem to be as prominent which could be a result of a blepharoplasty procedure."

But does it matter?

Much - too much - has been made of Renee's appearance changes.  After all since when were cosmetic procedures among Hollywood stars news?

Poor Renee is damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. If she ages we'll complain that she looks old. If she doesn't, we'll create a media circus around pictures of her with cruel headlines questioning 'what has she done to her face?!'

The following self-flagellation by the media is deserved. As Jennifer Gerson Uffalussy says in the Guardian, 'Nothing's wrong with Renee Zellweger's face. There's something wrong with us.'.

But is it just us who sort of want to try that Thermage treatment now?
