Despite being a newbie in the political scene, People's Action Party's candidate Dr Koh Poh Koon is confident in his campaign for the Punggol East by-election.

The 40-year-old colorectal surgeon said on Tuesday that even though Workers' Party's Lee Li Lian is more experienced, having contested in the general election in 2011, he has his own merits.

"Li Lian has had experience in the previous election, but for me that has never been something I think too much about," Koh said.

"I have been working hard on the ground in the last few days and the residents have warmed up to me. I don't think that [Li Lian's experience] would severely disadvantage me in any way," he added.

Koh said he will be focusing on local issues within the Punggol East constituency as he hopes to address his residents' day-to-day concerns immediately.

However, he added that if national issues do crop up during the campaigning period, he will address them.
