RMAF officer arrested in Texas for alleged arms smuggling

A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) officer was arrested by authorities at the San Angelo Airport in Texas on Wednesday for attempting to smuggle a PT-22 Taurus pistol.

According to the RMAF, the officer was preparing to return to Malaysia when he was detained by authorities at the airport.

"The RMAF officer has been in the United States since January 5 this year attending a military course at the Goodfellow Air Force Base."

"After completing the course, the officer was preparing to depart from the United States when he was found with the firearm," the RMAF said in a statement.

"The officer is now in the custody of Texas police and is expected to be charged in court on Monday," the RMAF added.

The RMAF said that it was following proceedings closely before deciding on the next course of action.

It is understood that the Malaysian consul and ambassador in the United States have also been informed of the incident. – April 20, 2014.
