“Stunning” and “spectacular” are just some of the words used to describe this destination, and for good reason. You’d need lengthy stops just to admire the view and take pictures, appreciate the parks, beaches and wildlife, and get involved in the local life.

Hike up Table Mountain
Getting to the summit of the flat-topped mountain, which overlooks Cape Town, is irresistible to the fit and energetic. Not into hiking? There are cable cars that’ll take you there. The view that awaits you is worth it.

Arrange a sleepover at Kruger National Park
A popular tourist attraction and self-drive destination, the park is a large game reserve that boasts quite a number of animals. If you want to stay a bit longer, choose a tented camp or luxury lodge for a night out in the wild.

Travel back to the past at Robben Island
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Robben Island is known for its prison – it’s where South Africa’s political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, were incarcerated. What’s unique about the tour is that the guides are usually former prisoners themselves, with lots of personal tales to tell.

Have a drink at the Winelands
As a fine purveyor of wine, the South African Winelands are a must for any oenophile. The vineyards of Stellanbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek are particularly noteworthy. A selection of cheeses, olives and pressed oils are also available to please the palate.

Laze on a Durban beach
The Golden Mile, a string of beaches with, yes – you guessed it – golden brown sand, is filled with surfers and sun seekers. Enjoy a day out in the sun before heading down for a hearty meal at one of the many pubs and restaurants along the shoreline. The uShaka Marine World aquarium nearby is sure to thrill the kids.

Go whale watching at Garden Route
Garden Route, a trail that passes through several towns and picturesque areas, has something for every traveller – but it also features activities like diving, hiking, mountain biking and sky diving for those who want to get their adrenaline pumping. Garden Route also happens to be a good place to watch whales. Generally, from the towns of Stilbaai through Mossel Bay and onward to George, Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma, you’ll see humpbacks between May and December, Bryde’s whales all year round and, if you’re lucky, the occasional Orca.

Indulge at Knysna
Situated along the Garden Route, Knysna deserves a special mention. Thanks to its lush forests and lagoon, the outdoorsy types have access to activities like diving, biking, hiking and surfing. It’s also filled with crafters and skilled artisans selling their wares. Knysna also has oysters and a micro-brewery – cool stops for foodies.
