Pengarah filem 'Tanda Putera' Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba berkata beliau sedia berbincang dengan beberapa penulis sejarah yang didakwanya "menyebelahi kaum Cina" berhubung rusuhan kaum yang berlaku pada 13 Mei 1969.

Katanya, beliau bersedia untuk menunjukkan dokumen berkaitan sebagai usaha untuk menimbulkan kesedaran bahawa "kemestian" mengadakan perbincangan berhubung punca insiden itu berlaku untuk mengatasi peristiwa yang dianggapnya "trauma" selama ini.

"Kalau kita tidak bincang sejarah kita, kita tidak (dapat) mengatasi trauma kita... Adakah kita bersedia, saya rasa bersedia atau tidak, kita mesti berbincang.

"Saya buat filem ini, supaya lepas kita tengok filem ini, harap-harap kita duduk berbincang, bukan sahaja dengan Melayu, tetapi dengan bangsa lain. Untuk faham mengapa benda ini (rusuhan) berlaku dahulu supaya tidak berulang lagi.

"Kita ada sejarah hitam dalam negara kita, seperti negara lain. (Tetapi) adakah kita nak sorok bawah karpet. Jangan beritahu sejarah hitam kita. Kalau kita sorok, kita tidak akan tahu, apa yang berlaku," katanya.

Beliau menjawab soalan hadirin sama ada rakyat bersedia menonton filem ini khususnya insiden rusuhan kaum seperti dalam sedutan filem yang ditayang dalam Majlis Diskusi Seni filem Tanda Putera di Univerisiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam malam tadi.

Bagaimanapun, Shuhaimi juga mempersoal soalan yang dilontarkan kepadanya itu, sedangkan pertanyaan berkaitan kesediaan itu, tidak pernah dibangkitkan sewaktu menonton filem dari Hollywood, Singapura atau Indonesia - yang banyak mengeluarkan filem genre politik.

"Tetapi bila kita tanya filem kita, kita kata, adakah kita bersedia tengok filem kita. Kita berhadapan dengan perkara itu. Kita ada 'psychological problem' kita sendiri," katanya.

Mengulas lanjut, Shuhaimi mengakui ada di kalangan orang muda yang terkejut dan sukar mempercayai adanya peristiwa itu yang mengakibatkan pertumpahan darah.

"Sebab itu kita nak orang belajar apa yang berlaku dahulu. Benda ni memang senang berlaku dahulu. Hari ini kita tengok, percakapan (berunsur) racisme, banyak keluar.

"Kita tak tahu (bahawa) benda ini boleh berlaku dengan cakap sebegitu," katanya sambil menambah insiden rusuahan hanya lima peratus daripada keseluruhan filem Tanda Putera.

Shuhaimi juga berkata "orang yang tidak menonton wayang" sukar menerima filem yang berbentuk sejarah khususnya yang berkaitan peristiwa 13 Mei, berbanding mereka yang kerap menonton wayang dengan pelbagai genre filem.

"Sebab, bila mereka tengok mereka tidak melihat dari sudut 'creative licence' kita. Bila kita buat filem, ia filem cereka, filem adalah filem. Dalam movie itu, ada 'creative licenne' dan ada fiksyen.

"Jadi apabila tonton, tontonlah sebagai sebuah filem. Kamu sedia atau tak, bukan persoalannya. Kamu tengok filem. Jadi buatlah macam tengok filem. Kalau kamu tengok filem, macam tengok dokumentari, jadi susahlah," katanya.

Shuhaimi menjelaskan filem sejarah dari Hollywood banyak menceritakan tentang berkaitan pembunuhan John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King atau filem Holocaust serta perang Cina-Jepun. Bagaimanapun, selepas menonton, penontot tidak beremosi untuk bertindak sedemikian.

 

"Tak ada (yang) keluar panggung, orang Jepun cari Cina, Cina cari Jepun (untuk membunuh). Orang yang menonton wayang, dia boleh menerima apa-apa. Orang yang tidak tonton wayang, saya tengok susah nak terima. Ini masalah yang kita hadapi sekarang ini.

"Tak boleh nak tayang filem ini (Tanda Putera), sebab orang yang buat keputusan adalah orang yang tidak tengok wayang. Orang yang tengok wayang macam kita, boleh terima apa-apa... Bila kita tengok, kita kena pakai imaginasi kitalah," katanya.

Mengulas mengenai penyediaan skrip Tanda Putera, Shuhaimi berkata beliau menjalankan penyelidikan selama hampir setahun untuk meneliti fakta sejarah daripada dokumen dan buku dari dan luar negara.

Katanya, mereka merujuk pelbagai versi buku yang menceritakan mengenai insiden tersebut bagi membentuk babak supaya tidak lari daripada fakta sejarah.

"Apa yang berlaku di rumah Datuk Harun, kita kena faham, pelbagai versi yang kita ada. Kalau kita baca versi negara ini, jelas.

"Tetapi versi wartawan barat semuanya berat sebelah... Kalau kita baca tu, kita kena betul-betul buat interpretasi dan buat pilihan mana yang paling dekat dan mengikut, sejarah negara kita," katanya.

Filem yang berdurasi hampir dua jam itu, tersebut antara lain mengisahkan hubungan erat dua pemimpin negara - Allahyarham Tun Razak dan Tun Dr Ismail - sewaktu sejarah hitam 13 Mei, yang menjadi latar dalam karyanya itu.
