Singapore tour bus overturns in Johor, 8 injured

A bus belonging to Grassland Express and Tours and carrying 11 passengers overturned and skidded yesterday on Malaysia’s North-South Expressway.

Eight Singaporeans were reported to have sustained minor injuries from the accident, which occurred at around 2am near Pagoh in Johor.

They were taken to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for treatment, along with bus driver Zainal Abidin and substitute driver Mohd Rusdi Ahmad.

Tan Boon Huat, Managing Director of Grassland Express, told TODAY he heard from the driver that the accident happened as he was trying to avoid hitting another vehicle.

He added that the crash happened soon after the bus resumed its journey after a 20-minute break.

The tour bus was on its way to Penang after leaving Beach Road at 10pm on Tuesday.

The New Straits Times reported that it went out of control and crashed into a divider before overturning at around the 145.7km mark of the expressway.

When asked about compensation for the passengers, Mr Tan said all 11 were covered under insurance schemes. He said the company will conduct a full investigation into the accident. - Todayonline.com, August 1, 2013.
