Student activist Azan released from Dang Wangi police station

Student activist Mohd Azan Safar was released last night, 20 hours after he was arrested for allegedly leading a group accused of plotting to overthrow the Government.

Mohd Azan, 24, a leader of Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Malaysian (Gamis) and the non-governmental organisation Turun, was released from the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 7pm.

Mohd Azan was supposed to be remanded for a week from yesterday to facilitate police investigation into violations of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and for organising a rally on New Year’s Eve to protest against price hikes.

A police source said police would continue to monitor Gamis and Turun’s activities.

Mohd Azan was picked up just before midnight on Monday while having supper in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur.

Mohd Azan told MalaysiaKini that he hoped for support for the cause.

“The struggle (to protest against the price hikes) will not end here,” he said in a text message.

Another NGO, Solidarity Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), has criticised the authorities for arresting Azan.

SAMM national coordinator Sheikh Yaser Abd Rahman also questioned the arrest. – December 25, 2013.
