KUCHING, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The Serian branch of the Sarawak United
People''s Party (SUPP) has expressed support for Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk
Richard Riot to be retained as the candidate for the Serian parliamentary seat
in the next general election.
It said in a statement that Riot had discharged his duties well as an MP for
Serian for 20 years and the constituents were comfortable with him.
"This was reflected in every parliamentary election where he (Riot) received
a huge and rising majority of votes," it added.
In the last parliamentary election, in 2008, Riot, who was then SUPP
assistant secretary-general, defeated Sylvester Belayong Jayang of the Sarawak
National Party (SNAP) by a majority of 13,427 votes.
The five-term MP''s political career began in 1990 after he won the Serian
seat as an independent but subsequently contested under the SUPP-Barisan
Nasional (BN) ticket, winning convincingly with increasing majority votes.
