MARANG, 27 Sept (Bernama) -- Kebiasaannya petai belalang atau nama

saintifiknya ''Leucaena Leucocephala'' hanya digunakan penduduk luar bandar

sebagai ulam tetapi kini pokoknya ditanam dalam usaha membangunkan industri

bioteknologi di Terengganu.

Menteri Besar Terengganu, Datuk Seri Ahmad Said berkata penanaman 40,000

biji benih pokok petai belalang di kawasan dua hektar tanah di Merchang di sini

menjadi langkah pertama ke arah mencapai matlamat pembangunan industri

berkenaan.

"Apabila tanaman itu matang sekitar dua atau tiga tahun nanti, ia akan

meningkatkan permintaan terhadap industri bioteknologi di sini terutama sekali

bagi Taman Kertih BioPolimer di Kemaman yang akan beroperasi pada 2014.

"Batang pokok petai belalang ini boleh digunakan sebagai bahan membuat

pelbagai jenis kayu papan atau menghasilkan tenaga wap manakala buah serta

daunnya pula dijadikan bahan makanan berasaskan biojisim," katanya kepada

pemberita di sini, hari ini.

Terdahulu, Ahmad merasmikan penanaman biji benih pokok petai belalang di

Mercahang yang turut dihadiri oleh Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Majlis Pembangunan

Ekonomi Wilayah Pantai Timur (ECERDC), Datuk Jebasingam Issace John.

PETAI-BIOTEKNOLOGI 2 (AKHIR) MARANG

Ahmad berkata kerajaan negeri komited memperuntukkan kira-kira 30,000 hektar

kawasan tanah untuk tanaman petai belalang yang boleh menghasilkan sekitar 10.5

juta tan serpihan kayu setiap tahun.

"Kita mengalu-alukan mana-mana golongan petani kecil dan sederhana dalam

usaha ini di mana kita menyewakan kepada mereka tanah bagi menanam pokok petai

ini.

"Projek ladang ini dijangka memberi faedah kepada kira-kira 3,000 peserta

dengan potensi memperoleh pendapatan dari RM2,500 hingga RM4,500 sebulan,"

katanya.

Ahmad berharap projek usahasama di antara kerajaan negeri Terengganu, ECERDC

dengan Perbadanan Bioteknologi Malaysia ini membawa kepada produk baharu

daripada pokok petai belalang.

"Petai belalang adalah jenis tanaman tempatan di Thailand dan Australia,

kerana itu saya berharap kita dapat melakukan kajian hibrid menghasilkan pokok

lebih baik untuk kegunaan komersial.

"Selain daripada petai belalang, kita juga menumpukan pada projek ladang

Akasia yang agak perlahan sejak beberapa tahun kebelakangan ini untuk

menggunakan Akasia sebagai sokongan kepada petai belalang dalam industri

bioteknologi," katanya.
