Teresa Kok almost falls victim to snatch thieves

DAP desak Kementerian Pendidikan siasat pelajar cemerlang gagal ke IPTA

DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok nearly became a victim of snatch theft on Sunday evening during an outing with her nieces in Kuala Lumpur.

The four-term MP was walking with her two nieces along Jalan Selama in Taman Rainbow at 7pm when two men on a motorcycle tried to snatch her gold chain.

"I was shocked and fell to the ground, screaming. Then I quickly ran behind the cars parked along the road.

"The pillion rider tried to chase me but gave up as there were other cars passing by the street," she said on her Facebook account this morning.

Kok (pic, top left) also posted a copy of the police report and uploaded CCTV footage of the incident on her Facebook page.

Her posting attracted 212 Likes and 103 Shares, with 65 people commenting on it, mostly wishing her well and expressing their relief that she was not hurt.

Kok, 50, believed this is not the first time the snatch thieves had tried to rob someone as they were fast and efficient.

"I hope the police can conduct more patrols in the area," she added.

Kok's experience underlines the concerns of Malaysians over soaring crime rates.

Police statistics showed that there were 4,436 violent cases for the first nine months of last year compared with 6,244 cases for the whole of 2012.

There were 15,375 cases of gang and armed robberies for the same period in 2013, or 76.3% of 2012's figure of 20,140 case, while the number of murders reported in the nine months were 478 compared with 602 for the whole of 2012.

Although police statistics have shown otherwise, many believed that crime rates have increased over the last few years.

The New York Times, in highlighting Malaysia's rising crime numbers in a report last year, had revealed that the number of certified security companies nationwide had more than tripled over the past decade to 712 from 200.

This was according to the Security Services Association of Malaysia which trains security guards.

The demand for security guards have gone up as many residents in middle-class and affluent neighbourhoods now put up guard posts in their neighbourhoods and block off access roads to prevent crime. – April 16, 2014.
