Tested: Mercedes-Benz A200 BlueEfficiency
Mercedes-Benz's new small family car is now in Malaysia, price from RM198,888. Here is the verdict after our test drive at Sepang International Circuit.

What is it?
The entry-level version, in Malaysia, of Mercedes-Benz's new premium compact hatchback with the dynamic good looks of its bigger CLS sibling. Its low-slung style (160mm lower) and bigger size (1409mm longer and 55mm wider) are a complete departure from its predecessor which was more upright and classified as a super-mini.
What's it like?
The all-new A-Class is unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz, from the shape of its grille to its lights. Its lineage and strong family look with hints of the SLS and CLS looks sets this car apart from its peers in the small family car/hatchback category with its sheer good looks and presence. Even in at base level it has 18” rims.
The A200 isn't particularly speedy but still manages a very respectable 0-100km/h time of 8.3 seconds from its turbocharged 1595cc engine. It has good acceleration at low revs though if you push it, the engine does get a bit trashy. The seven speed dual-clutch gearbox is smooth and responsive. The steering is reassuringly precise. There is limited body roll even when cornering at speed.
The interior is a sea of soft touch plastics and leather, giving it the premium feel that one would expect from Mercedes-Benz. The gear knob is a gear stalk (shift lever) mounted on the steering column – a feature which has filtered down from the bigger Benzes. There is a choice of Eco, Sport or Manual mode (gear changes being via paddle shifts on the steering wheel). Mode selection is through one button in a rotation between the three modes so switching is not immediate. The instrument cluster is uncluttered and well-laid out making it easy to read.
Should I get one?
Yes. The A200 BlueEfficiency costs RM198,888. It is fully imported and comes with a host of entertainment as well as safety equipment as standard including PRESAFE, Attention Assist and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, reverse camera and active parking assist.
