Three interesting souvenirs to buy in Bandung

From food to knick-knacks, here are three hip souvenirs from Bandung that offer both creativity and fun spirit to share with your loved ones back home.

The Wooden Spoon
Famous for its endless culinary delights, Bandung offers plenty of delicious foods to bring home as souvenirs, from pisang molen (banana pastry cake) and steamed brownies to cheese sticks and crackers.

Now, The Wooden Spoon's panna cotta has also gained a name for itself as one of Bandung's hottest new snacks.

Founded late last year by Amy Fahmi, The Wooden Spoon (TWS) offers mouthwatering pana cottas with vanilla, almond and hazelnut flavors and up to 12 choices of toppings such as latte macchiato; summer berry coulis and yoghurt; and apple sauce and cookie crumble priced at Rp 165,000 (US$14.36) per half-dozen.

"I love cooking, mainly Indian and Pakistani cuisine, but I think the market is very limited. So I asked myself, what kind of food that people would love to eat all the time, every day? And I thought of pudding and fruits. Who would not like them?" said Amy, adding that all his products were halal and lower in fat compared to the original Italian version.

Thanks to interesting promotion through Instagram, TWS business has grown quite fast in less than a year with around 800 to 1200 cups of panna cottas sold per month. According to Amy, his customers include Jakartans have them delivered.

Purezento
Purezento started out as hobby in 2007, when Yanto Hartono, Anggi Maulani and Sri Fatmariana decided to produce female accessories made of pins and keychains based on Anggi's drawing. The name means gift' in Japanese.

Anggi's drawing were not always in the Japanese style. But, according to Yanto, since they usually market their products at Japanese bazaars, they decided to remodel the designs accordingly.

"But, we also created Pancarona Indonesia, which literally means 'colorful Indonesia'. It is basically a collection of 33 couple-characters which represent each province in the country, wearing their traditional costume," added Yanto.

The new Pancarona collection is based on cities in Indonesia such as Bandung and Semarang. Their upcoming projects include launching Pancarona Jakarta and Garut.

Pingg!!!
If you are familiar with the spicy Maicih chips and crackers that became a national hit in 2011 encouraged other brands of similar products to emerge and become popular food souvenirs from Bandung.

Pingg!!! is actually the brainchild of one of its brand owners: After the three brothers involved in Maicih decided to go their separate ways due to irreconcilable differences, one of them, Arie Kurniadi and wife Novia decided to move on and rebrand the snack in October 2013 using the same recipe and composition -- as suggested by Pingg!!!'s tagline "rasa lama nama baru" (old flavor, new name).

"So basically Pingg!!! is Maicih under a new name and packaging," explained Arie.

Other than the famous keripik singkong (tapioca chips), gurilem, original cheese flavor and seblak (puffy crackers), Pingg!!! also has new original product called kerupuk jengkol (stink bean chips).

In the near future, the owners plan to open a small cafe to cater to its community as well.
