Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad hari ini mempersoalkan tindakan kumpulan gereja di Semenanjung Malaysia yang terus mahu menggunapakai kalimah Allah dalam upacara keagamaan mereka, dengan berkata perbuatan itu "menyakiti hati pihak lain".

"Selama ini kita tidak pernah berkelahi mengenainya kerana mereka (penganut Kristian di Semenanjung) tidak pernah menggunakan istilah itu, jadi mengapa perlu menyakiti hati pihak lain, tak rugi kalau tak guna istilah Allah," kata Dr Mahathir kepada pemberita selepas menghadiri sambutan Tahun Baru anjuran Parti Progresif Penduduk (PPP), di Kuala Lumpur, hari ini.

Menurut mantan perdana menteri itu, istilah bahasa Arab untuk 'Tuhan' adalah sesuatu yang biasa dipakai oleh masyarakat Kristian di Sabah dan Sarawak.

Jumaat lalu, editor majalah mingguan Katolik, The Herald, Rev Lawrence Andrew, berkata gereja di Selangor akan tetap menggunakan istilah 'Allah' dalam upacara yang menggunakan pengantara Bahasa Malaysia di gereja-gereja negeri itu.

Ini berikutan kenyataan pengarah Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (Jais), Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad, yang memberitahu pihaknya akan menyenaraikan semua gereja di negeri itu sebelum menghantar surat bagi meminta pihak gereja mematuhi Enakmen Agama Bukan Islam Selangor (Kawalan Penyebaran kepada Orang Islam) 1988.

“Kami akan mengutus surat kepada semua gereja di Selangor bagi menghormati enakmen tersebut, katanya.

Enakmen yang diluluskan semasa pemerintahan Barisan Nasional itu turut melarang bukan Islam di Selangor menggunakan 35 perkataan Arab seperti "Allah", "Nabi", "Injil" dan "Insya Allah".

Kenyataan Lawrence telah mengundang kemarahan beberapa pertubuhan bukan kerajaan yang antara lain mengecam tindakan itu sebagai tidak sensitif terhadap umat Islam dan tidak menghormati undang-undang.

Akhbar milik Umno Utusan Malaysia melaporkan Umno Selangor menuntut kenyataan maaf daripada Lawrence, atau berdepan dengan tunjuk perasaan di semua gereja di Selangor pada Ahad ini.

Ketua Umno Gombak, Abdul Rahim Kamarudin, memberi Lawrence sehingga Sabtu untuk menarik balik kenyataannya.

"Kita perlu bertegas serta tidak akan bertolak ansur dengan perbuatan ini. Tindakan ini biadab dan kita mahu beliau memohon maaf kepada seluruh umat Islam," kata Ketua Umno cawangan Kota Raja Kamaruzzaman Johari, dipetik Utusan.

Manakala timbalan pengerusi Badan Perhubungan Umno Selangor, Datuk Abdul Shukor Idrus, menuduh Lawrence sengaja mencabar dan mempertikaikan kedudukan Sultan Selangor, yang sebelum ini bertitah supaya istilah Allah tidak digunakan oleh bukan Islam.

"Melihat titah baginda mengenai larangan tersebut, ia jelas bertujuan untuk menjamin serta memastikan keharmonian antara masyarakat berbilang kaum dan agama di Selangor," katanya kepada Utusan.

Bagaimanapun, beberapa orang peguam menyifatkan kenyataan Jais sebagai melanggar perlembagaan.

Menurut presiden Persatuan Peguam Katolik, Viola De Cruz Silva, Perlembagaan Persekutuan tidak menghalang bukan Islam menyebarkan agama mereka di kalangan komuniti mereka atau komuniti bukan Islam lain.

"Justeru, sebarang surat daripada Jais kepada gereja di Selangor adalah tidak sah," katanya dalam satu kenyataan.

Presiden Majlis Perundingan Malaysia Agama Buddha, Kristian, Hindu, Sikh (MCCBCHST), Jagir Singh, pula mengingatkan keputusan hakim Mahkamah Tinggi Datuk Lau Bee Lan pada 2009 yang membuat penghakiman adalah tidak salah bukan Islam menggunakan 'Allah' selagi mana penggunaan itu dihadkan kepada penganut bukan Islam.

“Ia cuma menjadi kesalahan sekiranya bukan Islam menggunakan istilah itu untuk tujuan menyebarkan agama mereka kepada umat Islam," kata Jagir kepada The Malaysian Insider.

Perdebatan mengenai penggunaan Allah oleh penganut Kristian di Malaysia bermula pada 2008 selepas Kementerian Dalam Negeri menghalang The Herald dari menggunakan istilah itu di edisi Bahasa Malaysia majalah berkenaan.

Pada 2009, pihak gereja berjaya melawan keputusan ini di Mahkamah Tinggi, yang memutuskan bahawa penganut Kristian mempunyai hak perlembagaan untuk berbuatg demikian. Keputusan ini bagaimanapun diubah oleh hakim Mahkamah Rayuan, yang antara lain menegaskan istilah 'Allah' bukan sebahagian agama Kristian. - 1 Januari, 2014.
