Dakwaan seorang pelajar PhD bangsa Algeria yang mengatakan “Jika Nabi Muhammad S.A.W masih hidup, baginda akan mengahwinkan pasangan gay”, dianggap oleh seorang ulama Malaysia sebagai suatu penghinaan.

Bekas mufti Perlis yang lantang bersuara, Dr. Mohd. Asri Zainul Abidin mengecam tafsiran kontroversi daripada al-Quran oleh seorang gay Muslim, Ludovic Mohammed Zahed yang bercadang untuk membuka sebuah masjid mesra gay yang pertama di Eropah menjelang akhir bulan ini.

Stesen televisyen ABC melaporkan yang Zahed sebagai berkata “tiada apa-apa dalam Islam atau al-Quran yang melarang homoseksualiti” selain menambah, kecenderungan seksual seperti itu tidak pernah dianggap sebagai jenayah kejam dalam kalangan umat Islam hari ini.

“Menurut al-Quran, lelaki harus mengahwini wanita dan begitu juga sebaliknya.  Itu resam dunia.  Ini (dakwaan Zahed) sama sekali tidak benar. Ada banyak ayat dan teks yang menyatakan bahawa ini (homoseksualiti) adalah bertentangan dengan ajaran Islam,” kata Asri.

Beliau menambah tidak ada gunanya mewujudkan ‘masjid mesra gay’ kerana masjid adalah untuk semua.

"Dalam Islam, kita tidak memerlukan masjid-masjid khas untuk golongan penzina, gay, lesbian, orang berdosa, mahu pun ulama.  Islam tidakpernah membezakan manusia dan sesiapa yang datang dahulu boleh mengambil tempatnya.  Jika berhadapan masalah, sesiapa sahaja boleh pergi ke mana-mana masjid dan bertaubat," katanya kepada Yahoo! Malaysia.

Zahed yang sedang menyiapkan tesisnya tentang Islam dan homoseksualiti berkata dalam laporan berita  ABC, “Sekiranya Nabi Muhammad masih hidup hari ini, nescaya baginda akan mengahwinkan pasangan gay”.

Itulah antara alasan Zahed untuk mewujudkan sebuah ‘Masjid Perpaduan’ yang akan mula beroperasi di sebuah kuil Budha di sebuah kejiranan di timur Paris.  Di situlah solat Jumaat, akad nikah perkahwinan dan pengurusan jenazah diadakan untuk golongan yang ‘ditolak’ berikutan kecenderungan seksual sesama jantina mereka.

Menurut Zahed, masjid itu akan menekankan konsep yang ‘menganggap setiap individu ciptaan Tuhan adalah sama saja’.
Walau bagaimanapun, alamat dan lokasi sebenar masjid itu masih dirahsiakan atas sebab-sebab keselamatan.

Dia juga percaya penyair Islam yang masyhur menyanjung tinggi lelaki-lelaki kacak dalam puisi mereka yang mana sesetengahnya dilihat sebagai kiasan (metafora) yang merujuk kepada hubungan intim sesama gay.

"Ada kalangan transgender yang khuatir akan diserang, wanita yang tidak mahu bertudung  atau duduk di bahagian belakang masjid.  Projek ini memberikan harapan kepada mereka yang beriman dalam masyarakat saya," katanya sebagaimana dilaporkan dalam berita ABC.

Sebaliknya menurut Asri, apa yang lebih diperlukan ialah agar umat Islam mengamalkan Islam yang sebenarnya – suatu agama yang tidak menghukum manusia hanya kerana mereka gay. 

"Mungkin kita harus memilih untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini dengan pendekatan yang baik dan bukan hanya bercakap tentang hukuman dan menghina orang lain dengan mengatakan perkara-perkara buruk mengenai mereka,” ujar Asri.
"Barangkali kita gagal mengadakan satu dialog yang baik bersama komuniti gay.  Kita harus membantu mereka memahami ajaran Islam yang sebenar,” tambahnya lagi.

Dalam pada itu Asri memberitahu Zahed: "Masjid adalah untuk semua.  Anda tidak perlu mengisytiharkan masalah anda kerana ia adalah antara anda dan Tuhan.  Justeru anda boleh ke masjid untuk bertaubat.  Sekiranya ada sesiapa cuba mengintip dan mendedahkan perihal anda, maka merekalah yang berdosa.  Walaupun mereka adalah ulama, ia tetap berdosa.”

Masjid itu adalah ‘masjid mesra gay’ yang terbaru daripada sejumlah 21 masjid seumpamanya di dunia.
