Umno distances itself from Suara Wanita 1 Malaysia

Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin has moved quickly to distance his party from controversial NGO Suara Wanita 1 Malaysia (SW1M).

When pressed about the matter on Twitter on Tuesday, Khairy said SW1M president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen has no connection to Barisan Nasional.

He even poked fun at Sharifah's now infamous use of the word 'listen'.

"Please #listen to me: this Jabeen lady DOES NOT represent BN. Sekian," he said.

Asked if he had watched the 'listen' video, which has gone viral, he replied, "Listen x10000".

When asked why SW1M was using the 1Malaysia catchphrase, Khairy said anybody can misuse the '1M brand', adding that 'nobody' has heard of Sharifah or SW1M.

It would be a statement Khairy would be forced to repeat several times on Tuesday in response to a deluge of questions from his Twitter followers querying what Sharifah's connection to Barisan Nasional is.

Sharifah has been making news for all the wrong reasons ever since a video of her berating Universiti Utara Malaysia student Bawani KS went viral earlier this week. The 24-minute clip was taken at a forum titled "Seiringkah mahasiswa dan politik?' (Are graduates and politics aligned?) held at UUM in Sintok, Kedah on Dec 8. Sharifah was the moderator of the forum.

In the clip, Sharifah took offence at Bawani for bringing up Bersih and issues on free education.

Browbeating Bawani for lacking 'education' and 'respect', Sharifah went on to bizzarely equate human problems with those faced by animals before finally telling Bawani to go to another university if she wasn't happy in UUM.

From the response of the past two days, it's obvious that Malaysians are in Bawani's camp, not Sharifah's.
