Mohamad hari ini berkata Umno tidak pernah menyokong tindakan membakar kitab

Bible berbahasa Melayu yang menggunakan kalimah ''Allah''.

Beliau berkata kenyataan Presiden Pertubuhan Pribumi Malaysia (Perkasa)

Datuk Ibrahim Ali tidak mencerminkan pendirian Umno.

"Ibrahim bukan anggota Umno. Beliau mungkin menyokong Umno tetapi beliau

bukan jurucakap bagi Umno," katanya dalam entri terbaharu blognya www.chedet.cc.

Dr Mahathir berkata adalah malang Ibrahim harus mencadangkan agar kitab

Bible menggunakan kalimah Allah, yang baharu dicetak dibakar.

"Itu mungkin cara untuk kita melupuskan sebarang penerbitan yang tidak

diingini. Namun ia tidak boleh dilakukan untuk kitab suci seperti Bible dan

Al-Quran.

"Tetapi apa yang diperkatakan Ibrahim tidak mencerminkan pendirian Umno.

Malangnya, beberapa ahli politik ingin menganggapnya sebegitu untuk meraih

publisiti politik," katanya.

Dr Mahathir berkata beliau menganggap cubaan untuk membayangkan sokongan

Ibrahim terhadap Umno "bermaksud apa yang diperkatakan ialah apa yang dilanggan

Umno sebagai nakal".

Beliau berkata walaupun rakyat Malaysia boleh menganuti perbezaan fahaman

politik, namun mereka tidak harus menggunakan perbezaan agama untuk meraih

sokongan pengundi bagi memenangi pilihan raya.

"Ia umpama pedang bermata dua, dan mereka yang hidup dengan pedang akhirnya

mati oleh pedang.

"Biarlah kontroversi ini diselesaikan oleh orang yang bertanggungjawab

secara tertutup. Jangan biarkan pelampau mengambil alih dan mengeksploitasi isu

agama. Ia mungkin menafikan kebebasan bersuara tetapi kebebasan tersebut, di

dalam demokrasi yang liberal, mempunyai kekangan jika mahu demokrasi terus

subur.

"Saya ingin merayu semua pihak supaya menghentikan tindakan menyalahgunakan

isu ini," katanya.
