KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- To encourage children to read in the

English language, Les'' Copaque Production Sdn Bhd (Les'' Copaque) today launched

"Upin & Ipin: The Magazine" in the international language.

This comic magazine which came after the Bahasa Melayu version, was launched

by the deputy prime minister''s wife Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, who lauded

it as yet another effort to encourage children to read and this time to also

improve their English proficiency.

"Publishing ''Upin and Ipin'' in English is not aimed at sidelining the Malay

language which is upheld as our national language, but is additional reading

material for children.

"And if they want to learn English, they can read this comic magazine," she

said.

Norainee said the ''Upin and Upin'' animation series was very popular among

children, including her own grandchildren.

"This animation series does not only provide entertainment but also contains

noble values and lessons on everyday life.

"It also portrays the 1Malaysia concept where the children go to school and

play together, besides learning about and appreciating each other''s culture and

traditional values," she said.

Norainee also said that the reading habit must be inculcated from an early

age to encourage life-long learning as "reading is the source of knowledge".

''Upin and Ipin: The Magazine'', produced by Les'' Copaque in collaboration

with NYLA Sdn Bhd, also contains news, information, activities and contests

related to the animation characters.

Also present at the launch were Les'' Copaque managing director Burhanuddin

Mohd Radzi and NYLA executive director Tunku Maziah Tunku Mukhtar.

The magazine, priced at RM5.90, will be in the market from next week.
