Uproar over supermarket’s proposed liquor sale

Umno Serdang bantah cadangan pasaraya besar jual arak secara borong

A group of residents in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, are up in arms over the proposed sale of liquor at a supermarket in the area, claiming the move was inappropriate for a Muslim-majority area and will smear the image of their alcohol-free township.

Serdang Umno Youth chief Ahmad Yani Ahmad Aziz said the proposal was "unreasonable" in view of the majority of Muslims residing in the area, Utusan Malaysia reported today.

Yani said if the move was approved, it would forever tarnished Bandar Baru Bangi's image as an alcohol-free township.

The neighbourhood, he added, is also home to many students, especially from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

"Umno Youth has been receiving many complaints from residents who are uneasy after learning about the proposal," he said, referring to a notice published in a local daily on Tuesday that Aeon Big (M) Sdn Bhd was applying for an alcohol wholesale permit for the area from the Hulu Langat District Licensing Board.

Yani said his Umno branch was in the midst of completing a petition to be delivered to the board and also a protest note to be sent to the supermarket.

"We hope the supermarket will provide an explanation to the people of Bandar Baru Bangi on the matter soon," he said, as reported by the Malay daily. – November 8, 2014.
