Ecuadorian Authorities Say They Have Regained Control After Prison Riot

Ecuadorian authorities gained control of a riot that broke out on March 27 at a prison in Guayaquil, the Ecuadorian Armed Forces said.

This incident took place at the Deprivation of Liberty Center Regional Guayas, the same prison Adolfo Macias, one of Ecuador’s biggest drug lords, also known as Fito, had previously escaped from, local media reported.

Fito’s escape sparkled a period of violence and unrest in Ecuador, leading President Daniel Noboa to launch a crackdown on criminal gangs, declare a state of emergency, and announce an internal armed conflict.

The prisoners had set fire to mattresses in protest against treatment received from the military, local media said.

Footage posted by the Ecuadorian Armed Forces shows the aerial view of the prison in Guayaquil, accompanied by pictures of shirtless men laying face down in rows on the floor with their hands bound. Credit: Ecuadorian Armed Forces via Storyful
