Footage Shows Sunken Ship That Caused Philippines Oil Spill

The Philippine Coast Guard has released underwater footage showing the MT Princess Empress, a tanker that sunk in late February while carrying more than 800,000 liters of oil.

The Philippines Department of Health said nearly 200 people have become sick in connection with the oil spill that resulted from the sinking, off the province of Oriental Mindoro.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said over 32,600 families had been affected by the spill, with over 13,600 fishermen and farmers impacted.

Media reported that RDC Reield Marine Services, the owner of MT Princess Empress, was to be investigated.

The coast guard said it had been participating in clean-up operations in various villages. Oily water and oil-contaminated waste have been washing ashore. Credit: Philippine Coast Guard via Storyful
