Heavy Snow and Poor Visibility Shut South Dakota Highway

Heavy snow led to a portion of Interstate 29 in South Dakota being closed to traffic on Tuesday, March 21, as reduced visibility, icy roads, and blowing snow made conditions difficult for drivers.

According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, the highway was closed from Watertown to the North Dakota state line at 7pm on Tuesday, and had not reopened at the time of reporting.

Footage from South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) demonstrates the lack of visibility on the highway.

The SDHP tweeted that several semi-trucks had jackknifed on I-29, and urged drivers to “slow down, buckle up, and drive for the conditions.” Credit: South Dakota Highway Patrol via Storyful
